In January 2002 Professor Brenda Gourley became The Open University's fourth Vice-Chancellor, the first woman to lead Britain's largest university.
Both The Open University and Prof. Gourley have a social justice agenda, recognition of increasing global interconnectedness, and a belief in education as a tool to tackle the growing inequalities of the haves and the have-nots in the global society. Recognising the particular challenges of the twenty-first Century, Prof. Gourley is a sought-after speaker on a wide range of issues that affect higher education institutions and society more widely. Some recent contributions to conferences include `Will eLearning Deliver on its Promise?', `The Digital Divide as a Development Issue', and `Moving Open and Distance Learning to Centre Stage'.
